Are sessions virtual or in person?

Emily and Taylor see clients virtually only.

Julia sees clients in person at her SODO office on Fridays (918 S. Horton S.), and virtually Tuesday – Thursday.

For your virtual session, please have an excellent internet connection, a private environment, and minimize all distractions for your session time.

Do you accommodate evening and weekend appointments?

Our last appointment of the day is typically at 4 or 4:30pm, depending on provider.  None of use offer weekend appointments.  Please inquire with your individual provider for specific availability.

If you’re not finding an appointment time that works for you online, please reach out, and we’ll find something together.

How long are sessions?

Initial sessions are 60-70 minutes and follow-up appointments are 45-55 minutes.

Do you take insurance?

Insurance coverage for nutrition therapy in Washington state is quite good in general. We are in-network with Regence, Blue Cross Blue Shield, First Choice, Bridgespan, Kaiser PPO, and United.  For Premera, we are out of network, but out-of-network coverage tends to be very generous, especially with large employers like Amazon and Microsoft.

For Premera or any other insurance carriers, please check with your plan to see what your out-of-network benefits for nutrition counseling cover.  AND, because we know no one likes to deal with submitting insurance claims, we handle all the billing for out-of-network claims for you at no additional cost.

All you have to do is sit back and wait for your reimbursement check to come in the mail. If you do not have out-of-network benefits, call us and let’s talk about self-pay options prior to meeting.

How do I know if your services will be covered by my insurance plan?

Please call members services on the back of your insurance card and ask the following questions to get clarity on your benefits:

  • Verify the effective date of your plan.
  • Is the provider you’d like to see an in-network or out-of-network provider?
    • Julia’s NPI: 1972909752
    • Emily’s NPI: 1538603162
    • Taylor’s NPI: 1407426166
  • Does your plan cover Nutrition Counseling?  CPT codes are 97802 and 97803.
  • What percentage does your plan cover?  What percentage are you responsible for?
  • What is your deductible?  Is it satisfied?  Is nutrition counseling subject to your deductible?
  • What is your co-pay? N/A for out of network.
  • Are there any limits to your coverage? Ex: certain diagnoses or number of visits.
  • Is pre-authorization needed? I.e. letter of referral from your therapist or doctor.
What is your cancellation policy?

We ask that you kindly give us a minimum of 36 hours notice to cancel or reschedule your appointment.  The full session fee of $195 is due for cancellations or reschedules without sufficient notice.  For truncated appointments, the full fee is due.

Our deepest appreciation to you for respecting this policy so that we can keep our practice running smoothly.

The Process of Food + Body Therapy

How long will I need Food + Body Therapy?

The allure of a quick fix is so seductive! Quick fixes usually aren’t fixes at all. Together, we’ll take the slow and deep path. There is no one predictable linear path for healing; each person’s journey is highly individual.

Regular appointments over time will help you to gradually untangle the deep hold of body shame and diet culture. We can re-assess at any time the cadence of your appointments.

If you’re coming for help managing a chronic health condition, it is still difficult to estimate number of appointments, as the change process is non-linear and individual. Let’s talk about this individually in your discovery call or your initial appointment.

How frequently do you recommend your clients have appointments?

Even though we’re dietitians, our work together resembles therapy. Weekly appointments are generally best, especially in the beginning, though this varies by individual.

Let’s find a cadence that works best for you and your life.

What does Food + Body Therapy actually entail?

Food + Body Therapy is a nurturing space for you to unpack all the years of struggles with your body and untold food anxieties.

Together we discuss your beliefs about food and bodies, understand how those beliefs developed, and then work to dismantle your belief system that is keeping you down so that we can rebuild a belief system that is respectful of yourself and honors your health – physically, mentally, and emotionally.

We’ll also cultivate awareness through mindfulness practices – both in session together and in exploration and reflection exercises to do between appointments.

You’ll gain practical tools to help you attune to your body’s signals and your needs. We’ll guide you in crafting a personalized way of eating that is enjoyable, easeful, and that supports your health.

We’ll help you gather resources to bolster your healing journey and connect to community of people on a parallel journey.

I don’t have an eating disorder. But I do struggle with my relationship to food and body? Can you still help me?

YES. There is a whole spectrum of struggles with eating and body image, with diagnosable eating disorders at one extreme end.

If you are elsewhere on the spectrum, your struggle is real, and you deserve support in your healing, too. Let’s talk.

Will you help me lose weight?

Most of our clients feel the need or desire to lose weight, and also a strong pull to stop the food fight and the war against their body. How can those two possibly be reconciled? If you are feeling both at the same time, it’s normal.

Know that you are in exactly the right place to begin healing your relationship to food and your body. We’ll explore this together throughout your journey.

Although we cannot predict exactly what your body will do as it finds balance (nor can any other healthcare provider or nutrition coach), what we DO know is that ultimately our work together will deepen your understanding of how your body functions and facilitate the process of your body finding its natural healthy weight.

Will you give me a diet/meal plan?

The short answer? No.

You probably know A LOT about nutrition already! We believe that our clients already know how, what, and how much to eat. Our role is a guide to help uncover this intuitive ability.

That said, we do provide guidance, nutrition education, and suggestions when appropriate to help you craft a flexible, personal, and sustainable way of eating that serves your physical and mental health, and that fits your lifestyle.

If you are managing a chronic health condition or interested in being proactive with your health, I will be your trusted ally in cutting through the contradicting mess of nutrition info from Dr. Google, and help you feel confident and relaxed in your food choices.

Can you help me to manage my health condition?

A resounding YES! Our work together will help to reduce fear and anxiety about your condition, cut through your overwhelm by working step by step on the most potent healing steps, and increase confidence in your ability to manage your health. After all, you’ve got a life to live.

What types of chronic health conditions to do you work with?

In addition to eating disorders, we support clients with managing type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, prenatal and postnatal nutrition, and a range of digestive issues, including irritable bowel syndrome.

Do you give your clients assignments to work on between sessions?

We have no shortage of activities, reading and resources for you to explore outside of sessions. If you are a person that likes these tangible activities, we’ll build them in!

I have been weight-shamed by other health care providers; how do I know I will not receive this treatment coming to you?

You have a right to feel protective and skeptical. And, rest assured that the foundation of our practice is weight inclusive.

Upon learning about the focus of my nutrition practice, a yoga student of mine said: “No wonder you made me feel so safe in my body.”

We are committed to the Health At Every Size science and movement.

Additionally, Julia’s in-person office is accessible, and can accommodate your body, no matter its size.

I’m not sure I will ever be able to feel ease with food and be comfortable in my skin. Can you really help?

Again, you have a right to be skeptical. Our message and framework are a paradigm shift from the traditional “thinner equals healthier” model.

It takes time to trust this. Even though you may have spent years, maybe decades, in a tumultuous relationship with food and your body, healing is possible. Being an intuitive eater at peace with food and your body is your birthright.

Every person has this capacity built into their DNA. Our work is to uncover it, dust it off, and get it working again.

What resources can I read in advance or to support my work with you?

Classic and foundational books to get you started are Intuitive Eating by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch and Body Respect by Lindo Bacon and Lucy Aphramor.

We would not recommend just googling Intuitive Eating on the Internet. Unfortunately, Intuitive Eating is often misrepresented as a plan for weight loss, which is far from its original intent. We are happy to provide you many more individualized resources as we continue our work.
